Asking Jesus to show a miracle
16
1 One day the Pharisees and Sadducees, in order to test him, said, “To prove that you have come with God's authority, do a miracle from heaven and show it to us”, they asked Jesus.
2-3 So Jesus said, “If the sky appears red at the time of the sun setting, you say, ‘Tomorrow it will be good without rain and wind’.
And when the sun is rising, if the sky is red along with clouds, you say, ‘It will be windy and rainy today’.
You deceitful ones!
Having looked at the sky like this, you are able to know what will happen when, but why are you not able to understand what is happening in this period?*
4 The wicked ones and adulterers of this generation are asking for a miracle.
Except for the sign of the prophet Jonah,* it is not necessary for any other proof to be shown to them”, having said this to them, he left them and went from there.
Stay alert about destructive-teaching people
5 When Jesus disciples were crossing the sea, they had forgotten to bring bread with them.
6 Then Jesus warned the disciples, “You must remain alert about the Pharisees and Sadducees who are like yeast.”
7 So they were discussing amongst themselves, “He is saying like this because of our not bringing bread.”
8 Knowing that, Jesus said, “You of little faith!
Why are you discussing amongst yourselves that you didn't bring bread?
9 Do you still not understand?
Don't you remember how many baskets of leftover pieces you gathered and filled after serving a meal for a crowd of five thousand (5,000) people with five loaves of bread?
10 And don't you remember another time how many baskets of leftover pieces you gathered and filled after feeding four thousand (4,000) people with seven loaves of breads and a little fish?
11 Why do you not understand that I am not talking about bread?
You must remain alert about the destructive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees”.
12 Then the disciples understood that he was not talking about yeast, but about staying alert regarding the destructive teaching of the Pharisees and Sadducees.
Who is Jesus, truly?
13 And when Jesus came close to the town of Caesarea Philippi, he asked, “About me, Heaven's Man, who do the people say I am?”.
14 So the disciples replied, “Some are saying John the Baptist.
Some others are saying the prophet Elijah.
Some others are saying the prophet Jeremiah.
And some others are saying one of the prophets.”
15 Then Jesus said, “So who do you say that I am?”
he asked the disciples.
16 So Simon Peter said, “You are the saving one Christ* and the Son of the living God”.
17 Then Jesus said, “Simon, son of Jonah,* you are blessed.
Because this matter was not told to you by an ordinary man, but my Father in heaven told it to you.
18 Therefore, I will call you Peter.
This means rock.
I will cause my church people to stand on this rock.
The powers in hell are not able to overcome these church people.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven.
Whatever you reject in this world, I will also reject in heaven.
Whatever you accept here, I will also accept in heaven”.
20 After that, he said, “Don't tell anyone that I am Christ”, he commanded the disciples.
Jesus telling about his coming trouble and death
21 From then onwards, Jesus began to say to the disciples, “After going to Jerusalem, Heaven's Man must suffer much trouble.
The elders, chief priests and religious teachers will oppose him, not accepting him.
They will kill him, but three days later God will raise him to life.”
22 So Peter, having taken Jesus aside, said, “Don't say like that Lord!
It should never happen to you like this!
God should spare you from this bad situation!”
he warned him.
23 So Jesus, turning toward Peter, said, “You, Satan, get away from me!
You are hindering me.
You are thinking like men.
But you are not understanding God's thoughts”, he told him.
24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever says he wants to walk with me, he must deny himself, bearing his troubles* every day, and follow me.
25 Whoever wants to save his own life, will have to give up his own life.
But whoever gives up his own life for me, will save his life.
26 If, having won the whole world, what gain has a man found if his own life is lost?
Like that, what can he give in order to take back his lost life?
27 Heaven's Man will come in God's glory along with his angels.
Then he will give each one a reward according to his work.
28 Some of you who are standing here will see Heaven's Man who is God's Son ruling on the earth before you die.
This is true”, he told the disciples.
