To the chief musician, a maskil of David, when Doeg the Edomite came and spoke to Saul, and told him that David had come to the house of Ahimelech
52:Title See the story of this in 1 Sam 22:6-23. Maskil was probably a musical term.โ

๐Why do you boast in wickedness, O mighty man,
scorning ๐the goodness
of God continually?
52:1 There are people in this fallen world who are ashamed of doing good but boast in doing evil โ Ps 10:4; 94:4; Phil 3:19; 2 Pet 2:18. Doeg was one of these.โ
2 ๐Your tongue devises ruin,
like a sharp razor,
working deceitfully.
52:2 Doegโs words resulted in the death of many servants of God.โ
3 ๐You love evil more than good,
and lying rather than speaking
righteousness. Selah
52:3 See Ps 36:1-4. Are there such people now who love evil and lies more than good and truth? A very great many โ John 3:19-20; Rom 1:18; 2 Thess 2:10.โ
4 ๐You love all devouring words,
you deceitful tongue.
5 ๐God will certainly destroy you
forever.
He will take you away and pluck you
out of your dwelling place,
and uproot you from the land
of the living. Selah
52:5 A life of evil and deceit will have a certain harvest โ Godโs anger and punishment. At the end of this life the righteous will rejoice at Godโs just judgment on wickedness (Rev 18:20; 19:1-3). This is not personal vindictiveness but a holy joy in Godโs justice. Note at 35:8.โ
6 ๐And the righteous will see this,
and fear,
and will laugh at him and say:
7 ๐โLook, this is the man
who did not make
God his strength,
but trusted in his abundant riches
and strengthened himself
in his wickednessโ.
8 ๐But I am like a green
olive tree in the house of God.
I trust in the mercy of God forever
and ever.
9 ๐I will praise you forever,
because you have done this;
and in the presence of your saints
I will hope in your name,
for it is good.
52:9 In spite of evil boasters and persecutors David has full confidence in God. We should never let the wicked acts of men destroy our confidence in Godโs goodness.โ
