To the chief musician, a psalm of David
11
๐Ÿ“šIn the LORD I put
my trust.
How can you say to my soul,
โ€œFlee like a bird
to your mountain?
2 ๐Ÿ“šFor, look, the wicked bend
their bow.
They make ready their arrow
on the string,
so that they can secretly shoot
at the upright in heartโ€.
11:1-2 Once again David speaks of a time of personal danger. At some such times it might be wise to flee. But at other times it is better to take oneโ€™s stand and confidently trust in God - Ps 7:1. This is what David now does, in spite of the counsel of others. In times of difficulty the most important question is not, what is safe? but, what is right? what is Godโ€™s will?โšœ
3 ๐Ÿ“šIf the foundations
are destroyed,
what can the righteous do?
11:3 When wicked men destroy the just foundations of society what can good men do? They can take their stand for righteousness, knowing full well that God is on their side โ€“ vs 4,7.โšœ
4 ๐Ÿ“šThe LORD is in his
holy temple.
The LORDโ€™s throne is
in heaven.
His eyes see, his eyelids test
the children of men.
11:4 Here is Davidโ€™s confidence in times of difficulty and danger โ€“ God knows what is going on, and is ruling all from His holy throne (note at 47:2). There is peace in this for troubled hearts.โšœ
5 ๐Ÿ“šThe LORD tests the righteous;
but his soul hates the wicked
and the one who loves
violence.
11:5 Notes on โ€œtestsโ€ at Ps 66:10-12; Gen 22:1. On โ€œhatesโ€ see Ps 5:5.โšœ
6 ๐Ÿ“šOn the wicked he will
rain snares,
fire and brimstone,
and a fiery tempest.
This will be the portion
of their cup.
7 ๐Ÿ“šFor the righteous LORD loves
righteousness.
His countenance sees
the upright.
11:7 People of integrity who love justice as God does are the ones who will see His face โ€“ Ps 16:11; 17:15; Matt 5:8; Rev 22:4. Do we not have in these words of David a suggestion of the blessed life after death for the righteous?โšœ
